Chemical composition of rubber and plastic

By analyzing the chemical composition of natural rubber, it was found that its basic component is isoprene. This inspired people to use isoprene as a monomer for polymerization reactions, resulting in synthetic rubber known as isoprene rubber. The structure and properties of isoprene rubber are essentially the same as those of natural rubber. At that time, isoprene could only be obtained from turpentine, which limited the source of raw materials, while butadiene was abundantly available. Therefore, a series of synthetic rubbers were developed based on butadiene, such as cis-butadiene rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, and chloroprene rubber. With the development of the petrochemical industry, raw materials are obtained from oil field gas and refinery gas through high-temperature cracking and separation.

With the development of the petrochemical industry, various gases such as ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene, butane, pentene, and isoprene can be obtained from oil field gas and refinery gas through high-temperature cracking and separation purification, which are good raw materials for producing synthetic rubber. In the world's rubber production, natural rubber accounts for only about 15%, while the rest is synthetic rubber. There are many varieties of synthetic rubber with different properties, which can replace or even exceed natural rubber in many applications. Synthetic rubber can be divided into general-purpose rubber and special rubber. General-purpose rubber has a larger usage, for example, styrene-butadiene rubber accounts for 60% of synthetic rubber production; followed by cis-butadiene rubber, which accounts for 15%; in addition, there are isoprene rubber, chloroprene rubber, sodium butadiene rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, butyl rubber, etc., all of which belong to general-purpose rubber.
